Baseball #7

Daniel Gould to Jim Driscoll

Hi JD;

"Sort season = High Batt. avg." Obviously you didn't do your homework. Castro came up on 7th May 2010 and played in 156 games and had, I think, 164 hits and finsished at .302.

Guess what? Virgil Trucks name came up again with an article at: www.freep.com. This young fireball thrower for the Tigers, Verlander,  who has now come one batter short of two perfect games (you may recall last year's miscall by an ump that ruined his first attempt at a PG), nearly did it again yesterday. It was a no hitter but with one walk. An article mentioned that two Detroit pitchers---Trucks and Verlander---have more than half of the seven no hitters pitched by Tiger pitchers. It also mention that Trucks did it in '52 when he went 5-19 and the Bengals were 54-100. Both of Trucks NHs were won 1-0.

Your latest teaser is still teasing me...I, of course, agree with you about these silly records, but that is the point. Baseball's heart are in the stats. Many of which are ridiculous and leaves me with a so-who-cares feel. For several years, I tore out the short newspaper' liner notes about a new baseball record and especially treasured the obscure ones. But then the Int Herald Tribune decreased its coverage of sports and I no longer had the opportunity. But I still love the whole concept.

Keep forgetting...Please inscribe the book to my grandson...And I am still waiting for your bank number so I can make the transfer.

Sincerely;

Dan

Subject: SCOOP JOHNSON BASEBALL REPORT

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

DATELINE:  Thursday, May 11, 2011:  Surrey, B.C., Canada:

SAMMIE'S THUNDER GOES 2-2 IN TOURNAMENT

Sammie and the Thunder played a week-end tournament at the end of April, splitting 4 games.  They won 14-1 & 8-6, and lost 3-2 & 14-6. Sammie, for her part , went a combined 4 for 11, including one double, in the tourney, while playing in both the infield and outfield, and behind the plate. They fell short of making the tournament's final play-off round.

SAMMIE GOES DEEP IN REGULAR SEASON SO. VANCOUVER GAME!

Sammie K. hit her first HR of the season, a clothesline rope directly over the RF's head, in a 15-0 regular season romp over South Vancouver at Trafalgar Park in South Vancouver last Wednesday night (5/4) .  She went 1 for 4 overall, but that one was her finest hit of the year!

SAMMIE LEADS THUNDER TO ANOTHER BIG WIN!!

Sammie continued her hot hitting by driving in one run on a double to left, and scoring another after a walk, as the Thunder won again on Monday evening, 4-2, at home at Sunnyside Park in South Surrey.  She also threw out a runner at 3B while catching, culminating a fine over-all performance in the victory.

COLIN SUSTAINS TORRID HITTING STREAK IN FIRST LOSS

The C-MAN continued his torrid hitting streak at the beginning of this new season with 4 more hits, including a double.  Despite this, the Mini-Eight Giants lost their first game of the season, 15-8, last Wednesday evening at Centennial Park. Colin is now batting a sizzling .750 with 12 hits in his first 16 at bats in 2011!  (Pete Rose....look out!)

RYAN'S ATHLETICS  GO 2-2  IN LAST 4 LEAGUE GAMES

On April 30th, the Athletics defeated the Blue Jays, 9-4, despite managing only 3 hits in the game. The game's highlight was a HR from the bat of Noah, who had been stuggling as of late.  Brian and Sam chipped in with the other hits, and Ryan walked in all 3 plate appearances, scoring twice. Sam dominated on the mound, closing out the final 3 innings with 8 strike outs.

Then, on the next day, the Athletics let a 6-0 lead get away from them, eventually losing, 8-7, when the Yankees rallied for 4 runs in the final inning, helped along by 3 errors in the inning.   Brian and Jackson each contributed 2 hits in a losing cause.   Ryan pitched 3 innings, striking out 6, but was the victim of his team's faltering defense , giving up 4 unearned runs in the loss.

On Friday, May 6th, the A's rebounded for a 17-2 trouncing of the Giants, pounding out 11 hits.  Jackson led the assault with 2 hits, 4 runs scored and 2 RBI's. Calder went 2 for 2, plus a walk, driving in 3 runs himself. Jack added 2 more hits, including a double, and Connor finally broke loose with a booming triple to RF.  Big Sam and Ryan chipped in with 3 RBI's apiece, with Sam notching a bases-loaded triple, and Ryan getting a 2-run double to the LC fence and adding a bases-loaded walk.  Ryan and Collin each tallied 3 runs.

But then, on Mother's Day, the A's found themselves on the short end of an 8 - 6  score.  Brian and Noah each chipped in with 2 hits, and Noah added 2 RBI'S, but again the team's defense hurt their cause with 2 critical throwing errors in the 5th inning, leading to the Brewer's winning margin.  Huddy lead the Brewers to their win with 2 singles, 2 walks and 2 RBI's, and closed out the game with 2 dominating innings on the mound.
